“Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen” – Hebrews 11:1
At times, faith can be confusing. Often we are not sure what it looks like or how to demonstrate it in our daily walk and in times of trials and struggles. In Hebrews 11:1 we are given a definition of what faith is. It is about believing the Word of God – the promises of God – not our feelings or desires at the time – but understanding an end result displaying the goodness and love of God for His children.
There are some ideas of faith which are not consistent or practical. Some see faith as denying or hiding from the issues in one’s life. When we pretend something isn’t happening, we aren’t exhibiting faith, we are showing fear. God is very clear in His Word for us not to be afraid. Faith doesn’t ignore our feelings. We will have pain and grief while we are walking in faith, and it isn’t faithless to grieve or to have pain or sadness. Faith is not shallow. There are times in our lives where we will mourn, and we will rejoice; times when we will let go and times when we will gain.
Faith is not warm and fuzzy when our lives are falling apart. Faith is knowing Who holds our pieces when we are falling apart. Faith is believing in the Word of God and acting on that belief.
Deuteronomy 31:6, “Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid or terrified because of them, for the Lord your God goes with you; He will never leave you nor forsake you.”
Joshua 1:5, “ No one will be able to stand against you all the days of your life. As I was with Moses, so I will be with you; I will never leave you nor forsake you.”
Exodus 14:14, ” The Lord will fight for you; you need only to be still.”
Isaiah 40:29, “He gives strength to the weary and increases the power of the weak.”
Isaiah 41:10, “So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.”
If you ask God for guidance in prayer – He will direct you. Proverbs 3:5-6 tells us: “Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to Him,
and He will make your paths straight.” Those aren’t just words – those are truths. Our faith knows when we trust in Him, even when we do not understand, He will make the path straight. He will guide us. He will show us the way.
For thousands of generations, people have trusted in God – Noah, Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, Joseph, Esther, Deborah, Elijah, Elisha, Ruth, David, Mary… the list is endless. I bet you can look back on situations in your own life when you trusted in Him and He was faithful to you.
Faith is being faithful to God. Holding to His Word. Knowing He holds the answers to your life, He knows what is best, and He’s got a grip on you. He is not letting go. Everyone in your life may have let you down. Your business may have failed. Your children may have hurt you. You may have lost your job. Your health may be in jeopardy. Everything and everyone may have failed in your life – but God will not. Peter writes, “The Word of the Lord remains FOREVER” – 1 Peter 1:25.
The key to understanding faith is evidence in our lives. Faith is downloaded into how we view our situations and how we view opportunities of life. Throw yourself into the Hands of God.
