If Only…

This is what the Lord says— your Redeemer, the Holy One of Israel: “I am the Lord your God, who teaches you what is best for you, who directs you in the way you should go. 18 If only you had paid attention to my commands, your peace would have been like a river, your well-being like the waves of the sea.”  Isaiah 48:17-18

When I was a boy, a neighbor had a beautiful Tennessee Walking Horse gelding, jet black, about 17 hands high, with a white star on its forehead. My neighbor enjoyed showing his horse and most weekends we’d see him driving away in his truck pulling a horse trailer that probably cost more than our home. The Walker lived in a nice stable with all the amenities that separate an ordinary horse and a horse living in luxury.

Funny thing though, about once a week that horse would come wandering up our driveway. I remember my grandmother flinging a fit when it tore through her newly washed clothes she’d just hung on the clothesline. My dad would instruct me to walk that horse back home, and we wouldn’t see it for a few days and then its hooves adorned with large shoes would come clacking up the driveway yet again.

My mama would shake her head – if only that old horse knew how good he has it!

Ahhhh…not unlike us…knowing what the Lord has in store for us…knowing the plans He has for our lives…knowing we are children of the King…and yet, we wander away, wondering if there is something better, something more, something we can entertain ourselves with outside of God.

I don’t know about you, but I want to stay inside the protective bubble of my Lord and Savior.  I want to stay under His wings.

When we choose to live according to the commands of God, even when the waters seem rough; even when the waves of the sea appear to want to sweep us away, God’s mighty Hand is there to steady the way.

I challenge you today if you are wandering from God – stop. Get in line with His Word. Stay close to the scriptures. Connect with God in prayer. He knows what is best for you and for me.
