The BIG Goose Egg…

1 Corinthians 13:2, “And though I have the gift of prophecy, and understand all mysteries and all knowledge, and though I have all faith, so that I could remove mountains, but have not love, I am nothing.”

The gift of prophecy was highly valued – more so than speaking in tongues. Paul acknowledges even if a person has the gift of prophecy and understands the mysteries and knowledge of God; even if a person has a strong faith to move mountains and part waters; if he/she does not have love in his heart for God’s people – he/she is NOTHING.

That is a tough word. It is a tough thought. TO BE NOTHING…absolutely NOTHING…

Paul is telling us that LOVE is greater than Spiritual Gifts. The New Living Translation describes the verse in this way, “If I had the gift of prophecy, and if I understood all of God’s secret plans and possessed all knowledge, and if I had such faith that I could move mountains, but didn’t love others, I would be nothing.”

Basically, if you knew everything about everything – it wouldn’t be enough without LOVE.

Love is the cure. Love is the medicine. Love is the missing ingredient.

The way I interpret this scripture is suppose you were the smartest human being to ever walk the earth. I mean, you can calculate Einstein’s General Theory of Relativity in your head within minutes. You can quote Shakespeare’s sonnets freely without thought. At breakfast one morning you determine the cure for all cancers, and at lunch on the same day, you write a brilliant solution to world peace, and it works! Do you realize the value you would be? But to God, if you do not have love, you are of no value – you are NOTHING.

I enjoy numbers. Math is actually fun to me – I know what you are thinking – and you’re right – I am “one of those” kids in the classroom. If I took the biggest number I know without Googling, it would be 1 quintillion. The number has 18 zeroes. It looks like this: 1,000,000,000,000,000,000. If I multiply it by 0, guess what I get? ZERO…the big GOOSE EGG…NO VALUE…NADA…NOTHING.

That’s what all the talents and gifts of the world in you look like to God if you do not have love. That’s what your actions look like to God if they are not accompanied by love.

Journal Question:

I want to challenge you today to consider, are your actions based on the talents and gifts God has given you or are your actions based on your love of people? To God, it is a BIG difference.
